Welcome to etm guide on PAT Testing (Portable Appliance Testing), where we address the most common queries:

What is PAT Testing? PAT Testing, short for Portable Appliance Testing, involves assessing the safety of electrical appliances through a combination of visual inspections and electronic tests.

Why is PAT Testing necessary? Conducting PAT Testing ensures the safety of electrical appliances, serving as a crucial measure for landlords to fulfill their legal responsibilities in maintaining high standards of electrical safety.

What does Portable Appliance Testing entail? A competent etm engineer will perform a visual examination of the appliance, its plug, and its lead. For Class I equipment, additional tests involve injecting signals into the cable and appliance to verify their integrity.

Who should perform PAT Testing? Electrical tasks should only be undertaken by individuals possessing the requisite knowledge, expertise, and experience to mitigate risks to themselves and others. Many registered electricians offer PAT Testing services, ensuring compliance and safety.

What documentation can I expect? Following the inspection and testing, you will receive a comprehensive report comprising:

  • An inventory detailing each appliance type, name, location, and description.
  • Complete test results for each appliance tested.
  • A list of any failed items, accompanied by explanations for their failure.
  • Clearly labeled pass or fail indicators on each appliance, including inspection dates, next test due dates, and the inspector’s signature.

If you require further clarification or assistance interpreting the report, etm or competent engineer who conducted the inspection will be available to discuss it with you and advise on any necessary follow-up actions.

[Note: Class I equipment relies on the presence of an effective protective (earth) conductor for safety.]
